Emacs as an integrated development environment

Table of Contents

Emacs

The Emacs Editor While very much an Emacs novice, the helpful community and challenge of morphing this incredibly powerful environment to ones needs makes me think of this tool as simply one of the best pieces of software in existence. The customisation facility is endless and without equal.

Configuration

Most used packages

GUD : Grand Unified Debugger using gdb. Essential.

ECB : IDE "like" interface to provide methods, files etc in Emacs.

CEDET : a collection of developer tools essential for the emacs programmer.

GNUS : news reader and email client all in one. Incredibly powerful.

Gnus

ERC : IRC client in emacs.

  • An excellent IRC client for Emacs. IRC channels are simply one of the best resources out there for timely and cost effective help from experts in the field. The key is, of course, knowing where to look and sorting the wheat from the chaff!

ICICLES : a monster of an add on. Makes many things nicer.

Using GIT from Emacs : version control.

ORG-MODE : task planner and publisher. Used to publish this as an HTML web.

  • Googletalk on using org-mode by it's author Carsten Dominik.

NXHTML : multi-mode web development.

nxhtml

ELSCREEN : multiple screen handling

  • This enables you to keep "screen sessions" in a single emacs instance. e.g Screen 0 is Gnus, Screen 1 is GUD and Screen 2 is org-mode. One can then just hot key swap between these sessions.
